Samsung’s Galaxy S27 series reportedly won’t copy this upcoming iPhone feature

Back in May we heard that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra could get a 200MP main camera with variable aperture. Such a move would undoubtedly have been influenced by all the rumors claiming Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would have a variable aperture main camera.

Today, a new report from Korea says Samsung has ultimately decided against using a variable aperture main camera on any device in the Galaxy S27 series.

The reasoning apparently has to do with increased manufacturing costs and the fact that the variable aperture would make the camera bumps thicker. The company reached the conclusion that the functional benefits of the feature were not significant enough for smartphone cameras to be worth the extra cost, especially as every smartphone maker is already dealing with much higher DRAM costs.

As you may know, Samsung did go the variable aperture route with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 in 2018 and 2019, but the feature didn’t stick around afterwards.
