WhatsApp to replace Tenor with Klipy for GIF searches

WhatsApp is preparing to replace Tenor with Klipy as one of its default GIF providers. The change was discovered in the latest iOS beta update by WABetaInfo (version 26.2.10.70), which is available through the TestFlight beta program. The update confirms that the feature is under development and will roll out in a future version of the app.

Tenor recently announced that it will shut down its API services on June 30, 2026. The platform has already stopped accepting new developer registrations. In response, WhatsApp is integrating Klipy to ensure users can continue sharing GIFs without disruption once Tenor becomes unavailable.

Klipy is a content platform that offers a wide collection of GIFs, memes, and stickers. It provides an official API that allows apps to search and share animated content. WhatsApp plans to switch current Tenor users over to Klipy automatically. The transition will not require any user action. The app will show a Klipy label on shared GIFs to indicate the change.

Currently, WhatsApp supports GIF searches through both Giphy and Tenor. Depending on the user’s region or configuration, some accounts only have access to one of the two. When Tenor goes offline, WhatsApp will route those users to Klipy. Giphy users will not be affected.

The switch to Klipy is not limited to WhatsApp. Other platforms that currently rely on Tenor, such as Discord, have also begun transitioning to Klipy in anticipation of the June deadline. WhatsApp has not provided a specific release date for the change, but the migration is expected to be completed before July 1, 2026, to avoid any service disruption.
