Samsung Display reportedly kicks off OLED panel production for foldable iPhone

Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which is rumored to launch as the iPhone Ultra, is expected to debut in September. Back in April, a report claimed that Apple had selected Samsung Display as the exclusive supplier of foldable OLED panels for the device.

According to a new report from the same source, Samsung Display has now received approval to begin OLED panel production after achieving over 80% manufacturing yield.

The report adds that Samsung Display’s manufacturing facility in Vietnam has already begun operations. Apple has reportedly asked the company to produce an initial batch of 3 million OLED panels this year.

While an earlier report claimed that Apple would use Samsung Display’s M14 display stack for its first foldable iPhone, the latest report suggests the company has opted for the newer M16 luminescent material instead.

The M16 stack is reported to deliver higher brightness, improved color reproduction, better power efficiency, and a longer lifespan. The OLED panels are also said to incorporate Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology.
