Moto G Max silently launches as a rebranded Moto G87

Motorola launched the Moto G87 back in late April, releasing it in May, and now it’s kind of launched it again, in Brazil. But it’s called Moto G Max over there for whatever reason. The Moto G Max can be yours from Motorola’s Brazilian online store for BRL 2,519.10, which right now translates into $488.

For that amount of cash you get a smartphone with a 6.8-inch AMOLED screen with “1.5K” resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 5,000-nit peak brightness, and Gorilla Glass 7i on top. The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 SoC, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

On the rear there’s a 200MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture and OIS, and an 8MP ultrawide camera, while for selfies you get a 32MP snapper. Keeping the lights on is a 5,200 mAh battery with support for 33W fast wired charging.

The Moto G Max has stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, IP66/IP68/IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, and complies with the MIL-STD-810H standard too. It packs an in-display fingerprint sensor and runs Android 16. It measures 164.58 x 77.37 x 7.38 mm and weighs 183g.

It’s unclear if Motorola plans to bring the Moto G Max name to other markets, or will stick with it in Brazil alone, using the G87 branding elsewhere. We obviously can’t tell you why the same handset needs two different names, but it’s a regular practice in the industry as you may know.
